The approx. 20 m high north wall of the quarry opens up heavily weathered, yellowish-green-gray suevite.
Only with evidence of high pressure minerals could the volcano theory be refuted and the impact theory valid today confirmed.

The Nördlingen St. George's Church with its tower "Daniel" and many other Nördlingen buildings were built from the suevite rock mined here.

Due to the rocks found in the Ries, especially the Suevits, the Ries was initially considered to be a volcanic structure. Only in 1960 could it be proven that they are remnants of a 14.6 million year old impact crater, which originated during the Ries event.
