Schattendorf gained notoriety through the shots ... On January 30, 1927, three members of the right-wing German-Austrian Front Fighter Association shot at the clearly outnumbered but unarmed participants in a demonstration by the Republican Protection Association in Schattendorf, killing the six-year-old Josef Grössing and the Klingenbacher Schutzbündler Matthias Csmarits. The perpetrators were acquitted of self-defense by a jury.

On July 15, 1927, one day after the Schattendorfer judgment, angry workers gathered in front of the Palace of Justice in Vienna, stormed it and then set fire to it; the Ignaz Seipel government ordered the demonstration to be put down. The so-called July Revolt resulted in 89 deaths, including on the part of the police; the burned down palace of justice and the aggravated political climate were additional steps in the civil war.
