History and Origin
The building was constructed between 1714 and 1746 by the Spaniard Jerónimo Quezada y Garcón.
It originally served as a church for the Jesuit order.
It was one of the last buildings erected by the Spanish on Dominican soil.
Transformation into a National Memorial
In 1958, the then-dictator Rafael Trujillo transformed the building into the National Pantheon of the Dominican Republic.
