Around 1200, the Counts of Calw-Vaihingen built a castle with a shield wall, keep and moat on the mountain, which was already inhabited by the Celts. Count Konrad von Calw-Vaihingen called himself Count von Neuenbürg from the middle of the 13th century. The town of Neuenbürg was first mentioned in documents in the 13th century.

The Habsburg royal family also expressed interest in the strategically located castle at the time by purchasing Neuenbürger Castle for the empire. Neuenbürg itself was Baden back then. But the people of Württemberg were soon to take over the castle from imperial ownership.

Long-term renovations and expansions of the castle in the Renaissance style began in the 16th century. Neuenbürg Castle was originally planned as the residence of the Dukes of Württemberg.

Despite a devastating fire in the Thirty Years' War and a hasty reconstruction, Neuenbürg Castle is still one of the most important architectural monuments in the German south-west. Since 2010, Neuenbürg Castle has been one of the top ten highlights in the region.
