The cross on the border

The cross with two crossbars - an ancient symbol of Christianity - appears in Lorraine from the middle of the 15th century. It was an emblem on the war flags of the Counts Anjou, who had become lords of the duchy in 1431. During World War II, Charles de Gaulle made the Lorraine Cross a symbol of resistance against the war machine of the Third Reich.
