Best Hiking Routes to Grand Western Canal Ruins near Wellington

Tips

  • The Grande Western Canal linked Taunton to Bristol and the intention was to eventually link it to Exeter's canal and to the Channel beyond. It was built in the early 1800s, particularly to transport lime out of the region but, due to the fast construction of railways, the canal wasn't used for very long. Today, there's a significant section open and in use by leisure craft, between Tiverton and Beacon Hill. Beyond that, the canal is dry and largely overgrown, even hidden in places. This section along the outskirts of Wellington has a footpath alongside its original course.
