In 1973 Pope Paul VI raised the church became the papal "Basilica minor" and therefore strongly recommended it as a place of pilgrimage. Due to the arm relic of St. Benedict exhibited under the popular altar, a gift from Charlemagne around the year 800, Benediktbeuern is the third most important Benedict pilgrimage site in the world after Montecassino and St.-Benoit-sur-Loire. If desired, pilgrimage groups can receive the blessing at the end of their solemn pilgrimage mass or devotion with the Benedictus relic set in silver.(Source: kloster-benediktbeuern.de/Kloster/Pfarrkirche-und-Basilika-St.-Benedikt)
