Langweer used to only be reached by water. It was a swampland, and it was only in 1856 that it was connected to the outside world via the Brédyk (dyke) via Sint Nicolaasga.
In the 1990s, Langweer became a popular tourist town due to its picturesque streets and water sports opportunities. One of the main events is Skutsjesilen, a sailing race that takes place every summer.
The name Langweer is derived from the Frisian name Langwar.
The village symbol found on the flag is a swan, which may be derived from the right of farmers to shoot swans.🙈 (Wikipedia)
