The Groote Gat is a remnant of an old weel that was once created by a dike breach. It is now a nature reserve where you can walk on unpaved paths. In and around the water you can see birds such as water rail, merganser, cetti's warbler, grebe and occasionally a bittern. The bushes around the water are teeming with songbirds such as long-tailed tit, goldcrest and all kinds of finches. The Marsh Harrier breeds in the reed bed. Sparrowhawk and hawk hunt there and sometimes the white-tailed eagle flies over it, much to the frustration of barnacle geese and greylag geese. A beautiful nature reserve to stroll around.
