Best Hikes to Roker Pier and Lighthouse

Tips

  • Adorned by a functioning lighthouse, Roker Pier is a Grade II-listed landmark that curves gracefully out into the North Sea's cold embrace. Guided tours of the lighthouse are available, while a stroll out onto this magnificent breakwater is always a bracing experience.

As Sunderland grew to be a thriving port in the 19th century, Henry Hay Wake designed both Roker Pier and the South Pier. Upon completion, it was championed as a work of engineering genius, consisting of granite-faced concrete blocks and arcing 1,198 feet (365 m) out to sea.
