A magnificent gorge, which is also clearly visible from the sea,
with sometimes dangerously steep climbs on the mountain hiking boots are absolutely advisable. In the lower part, it is quite wide and the trails well visible, sometimes quite comfortable to walk, the higher you get, it is narrow and has quite steep passages or bottlenecks that need to be taken. That makes them interesting again. In any case, an impressive mountain hike that requires absolute sure-footedness. Sticks are quite helpful.

Did the tour as a circular walk.
In the sum and the heat it was quite exhausting. Impressive gorge, the most beautiful one that I have hiked in Crete so far. Unfortunately the café at the end of the gorge was closed, so you have to have plenty of water!

At the entrance it says “relatively easy”. That is definitely not the case. Absolute surefootedness and hiking boots are required. There is a section of about 800m that requires a head for heights. Be careful: kommot underestimates the length by far. I had planned the tour as a circular tour (down to the monastery and back along a mountain path east of the gorge). Kommot said it would take just under 4 hours and 8.5km. It's actually 13km and after 3.5 hours you've just arrived at the monastery.

That said: a demanding but impressive hike!
