Marble and later lime were once mined here. The white kiln was first mentioned in the 15th century. At the end of the 19th century, mining was stopped until the middle of the 20th century. Mining continued for a few years.
Various species of bat now live in the tunnels and the area is a nature reserve. Guided tours are offered here; please inquire at the Lengefeld Miners' Association.
