The oldest church in Kampen and also the most striking feature along the IJsselfront: the Bovenkerk, also called St. Nicolaaskerk. This large cruciform Gothic basilica was built in the 14th century. The imposing Bovenkerk has a steeple with bells cast by bell founder Geert van Wou in 1481/1482. Prominent Kampen residents are also buried in the church, including the painter Hendrick Avercamp. The monumental church attracts many visitors every year.

The Bovenkerk (German Upper Church) or St. Nicholas Church in the Dutch city of Kampen is a large, Gothic basilica with a cross plan and at the same time the dominant feature in the cityscape of Kampen. Inside the church there is an early Renaissance rood screen, a natural stone pulpit and a monumental organ. The church has a steeple and a nave with double aisles as well as a closed choir with a walkway and a chapel wreath. The church has 1,250 seats and is an example of the Lower Rhine Gothic style and a registered cultural monument. [1] After St. Janskathedraal in ’s-Hertogenbosch, the church has the second highest choir in the Netherlands. It contains an important historical organ; the ringing comes in part from the foundryman of the most famous medieval bell, Gloriosa, Gerhard van Wou.
