Between 1991 and 1995 the city of Kaarst implemented the art project "Towards the middle" as part of the development of the new city center. This was created jointly by the Kaarst artist Martel Wiegand († 2006) and Dr. Helmut Blochwitz developed. The project included, among other things, the installation of works of art in the interior and exterior of the new council and community center. In the outdoor area, a total of 23 art steles were installed on the town hall square, in the city lake and in the city garden. The artificial steles are all made of concrete and have a uniform diameter of 25 cm. The height is 2.25 m above the water level or 2.00 m on land. The steles not only have the function of carrying art objects, but they are themselves an essential part of a comprehensive artistic design for the installation of Works of art in public space. The positioning of the steles was based on the drafts of a fictional constellation by the artist Wolfgang Kliege.Source: kaarst.de/kultur-freizeit-und-stadtinfos/kultur/kunst-im-oefflichen-raum/stelenkonzept.html
