Laufenburg is one of the "four forest towns" on the edge of the Hotzenwald and German border town to Switzerland. On the Swiss side of the separated in 1801 by the Peace of Lunéville district Laufenburg AG (Aargau), formerly called "several city" or Großlaufenburg, while the now Baden part "lower city" or small running castle was called. Since the Middle Ages bridges connected the two districts. In 1911 the Laufenbrücke was opened to traffic, followed in 2004 by the Hochrheinbrücke.
