The name Unkel probably comes from Latin (uncus = bow, hook) or from Franconian (angel = bow, curve). Since the Rhine makes a large bend near Unkel, the entire area to the right and left of the bend in the Rhine was initially called uncus. Later, the adjacent settlements of Unkel and Unkelbach were also given this name.

Franconian grave goods from the 7th century, which were discovered in Unkel in 1900 and 1923, prove that Unkel was already settled around 600 AD. The first documented mention as Oncale in the Golden Book of the Prüm Abbey took place on February 26, 886. Unkel was last mentioned as Prüm property in 943.
