It is believed that the first church on this site was built before the establishment of Petersfield as a town. It was possibly founded by Queen Matilda, wife of William the Conqueror, who owned the Manor of Mapledurham (Mapledresham) for some years but died shortly before the Domesday survey of 1086.Ref. stpeterspetersfield.org.uk/about_stpeters/the-history-of-st-peters-churchThe ancient church, a Grade I listed building, is located in the centre of the town, on the south side of the Square. The architect Nikolaus Pevsner described it as "one of the most interesting churches in Hampshire".Ref. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Peter%27s_Church,_Petersfield
