Saint Helena, to whom this church in Eschdorf is consecrated, was the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great (who recognized Christianity as a religion after his victory at the “Milvian Bridge” in front of Rome and the long period of persecution with the “Edict of Tolerance” from Milan finished). In the early fourth century she went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Israel / Palestine) and brought numerous relics from there to Europe, including the "True Cross" on which Jesus Christ was crucified. It is therefore often represented with a cross as an attribute. The feast day of Saint Helena in the saints calendar is August 18th.
