The fortified church of St. Oswald is one of the largest fortified churches in Austria. Instead of a Romanesque Oswaldi - church gen. 1190, the late Gothic new building was built from 1470 to 1512. From 1482 Emperor Friedrich III. Due to the constantly increasing danger from the Turks, the low cemetery walls of the church were expanded into a defensive church fortification. From 1530 to 1532 the complex was strengthened, the west gate of the church was bricked up and the "Vorwerk" was built. After the liberation of Vienna in 1683, the three-storey defense tower was converted into a residential tower for the Messner family, who lived there until the 1950s. The upper floor is now used as a meeting place, and underneath there is a display depot that is well worth seeing.
