Elgersburg Castle, located at an altitude of approximately 520 meters, was built between 1056 and 1088 as a stronghold to secure the trade routes through the Thuringian Forest. By 1139, it had been owned by the Witzleben family. It is one of the most beautiful, oldest, and best-preserved castles in Thuringia.
In 1802, it was sold to the ducal chamber of Gotha. In 1838, it was first used as guest accommodation for the Elgersburg cold water sanatorium.
The castle's current appearance was created between 1905 and 1907 when it was converted into a residential palace by Baron von Frege-Welzin.
