Linden were already considered sacred or "true trees" in their earliest times, among which right was often spoken. Also under the lime tree on the Kalkarer market place was initially held under the open sky and in public court. The court had to be marked; before each trial, a "fence" was created to exclude the noise of everyday life and to create peace in the court. This was done first with rope and pegs. Later, the ancient custom revived in the fourth row of benches.
Gradually, the court moved from the Linde to an attached to the town hall arbor and later in the Schöffenkammer the town hall.
From the 17th century, the linden tree served only as a gem for the market.
In 1959 it became clear that the tree withered and died from the top. After lengthy considerations, which did not rule out a felling of the tree, he was extensively treated and restored in 1972 tree surgery. He is well, and it has now become a matter of course to control this more than 470 years old cultural and natural monument regularly.
