About every 12.5 hours, as in a biblical story, the water disappears between the mainland and the island. Just then, the state-certified mudguard and his group set out to explore the endless expanse of the Wadden Sea. Meeting point is the harbor car park of Neßmersiel, in front of the dike right next to the harbor building. On the approximately two and a half hour hike, always the island firmly in view, you walk on the salt meadow path at Spülsiel in Neßmersiel. On the way, you cross several tidal channels, while questions from the Watt Guide are answered. The ship then goes back to Neßmersiel. Seals are not uncommon on this tour.

But beware: Due to the tides and the peculiarities of the landscape, this tour is basically to entrust an experienced watt leader, because only he has the knowledge of which path is accessible at what time. It's best to book your individual tour by clicking on "request information" below.

Mudflat hiking is part of a North Sea holiday like ebb and flow of the Wadden Sea.

Neßmersiel is considered the Mecca of mudflat hikers. Most of the most beautiful mudflat walks to the islands of Baltrum and Norderney start from here.

In 2008 we spent a lovely week here. You should never underestimate the tide at the North Sea! A real mudflat hike should therefore only be done with a knowledgeable guide or only carefully close to the shore.

The most popular mudflat hike on the North Sea is the hike from Neßmersiel to the North Sea island of Baltrum. The mudflats are easy to walk on on this route, and you can even walk barefoot over long distances. The tour only takes about 2.5 hours.

At low tide you walk along the salt marsh path on the Spülsiel in Neßmersiel and then it is time to take off your shoes and continue with sneakers or thick socks. Above all, the mudflat guide with a fork in hand and lots of interesting information in his small luggage. A 6.5 km walk on the sea floor and incomparable experiences lie ahead of you.

A particularly successful hike from Neßmersiel to the island of Baltrum is offered by the Watt hiking guide Johann. We were there in June and were thrilled.
