The toponym Brenta d'Abbà is documented for the first time in 1491, but its origins date back to at least three centuries earlier.
A notarial deed from 1110 mentions a villa called “Castellum de Brenta”. In 1129 those agricultural lands, together with the court of Concadarancio of which they were part, were sold to the Padua monastery of Santa Giustina; hence the change of the archaic name to Brenta d'Abbà, or the abbey.

The primitive church, prior to 1234, was dedicated to San Paterniano, bishop of Fano, and depended on the parish church of Bovolenta.
In 1492 the building was completely rebuilt and consecrated in the same year by bishop Pietro Barozzi. In 1624 he was elevated to archpriest. It must have been a church of a certain value, from how Cardinal Rezzonico described it in 1744.

As the years passed, the structure was left to decay and in the twentieth century, with the increase in population, it became insufficient.
In 1946, work began on a third church with a bell tower, inaugurated in 1954. The previous one had been demolished, with its late nineteenth-century bell tower, three years earlier.
