The Albalat hermitage was built in the 14th century and dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption or Saint Mary. It was the old temple of the Albalat fortress, surely fortified against the threat of the Barbary pirates who devastated the coast, specifically after a major attack on the neighboring town of Torreblanca in the year 1397.
