As early as 1337, a wooden stepping crane was mentioned in the Stader city book. This wooden crane, which still had its drive wheel on the outside, fell victim to the great fire in Stade in 1659. In 1661 the wooden treadmill was rebuilt, this time with the treadmills inside. The stepping crane at the old port was used to unload a load or to load the ships. This crane was in service until 1898, when the city fathers in Stade had it abandoned for no real reason. In 1977 the Stade wooden treading crane was rebuilt in the same place according to reconstruction plans. The technical monument completes the historical picture of the fish market.
