Ziteil Pilgrimage Site

The Marian shrine in Ziteil is located in the political municipality of Surses, Graubünden, at 2,433 meters above sea level, making it the highest pilgrimage site in Europe.

The apparition of the Blessed Mother in the forest of Salouf
In July 1580, an 18-year-old girl who had gone up the mountain to gather wood appeared in the Oberhalbstein, a woman of small stature and dressed in white. Her face was covered with a white veil. So she spoke to the girl: “Go and tell the people in the land of Oberhalbstein that they have now sinned so much that no more can be endured. If it does not improve, God will punish it severely, so that not only will the crops wither, but the people will die from youngest to eldest. I can no longer intercede with my son for this people."
After the woman disappeared, the girl dared not tell anyone about it. The next day, when she came to the same place, the same woman appeared to her again and asked her why she had not told the people what she had told her. When the girl replied that she was not allowed to say anything, she repeated the same thing again, adding that she should not be afraid and tell the people to repent and take procession with the cross and then God will easily forgive their sins. This time the girl should not fail to tell the people what she has been told, otherwise she will be punished herself.
