In 1354, a Niklas was the Sax owner of the court at St. Urban, the church that is located next to the present castle. Around 1448 the estate went to Leonhard von Presing (Prösing). At that time, the building was named Reideben. At that time the construction consisted only of the today's south wing and the half west wing, the remaining part of the yard was closed by a wall. In 1480 Reideben was largely destroyed in the Turkish Wars.

In 1580, David von Presing sold the estate to Alexander von Freyberg, who probably gave the castle its present form. His son Helfried had to sell the castle in 1629 because of his Protestant faith. After several changes of ownership Reideben came in 1672 to the diocese of Bamberg, 1686 to Otto Graf von Dernbach and 1693 to the Cathedral of St. Andrä. In 1808 Reideben went with the entire pen assets to the k.k. Religion fund. In 1819 Anton von Pettenkofen acquired the property in an auction, in 1835 it was acquired by Josef Rainer von Harbach. In 1846 Hugo Henckel von Donnersmarck bought the castle, which is still owned by the family.
