Stain Dale & the Hole of Horcombe loop from Levisham — North York Moors National Park

    23.8km

    460m

    460m

Embark on a difficult touring bicycle loop from Levisham, covering 14.8 miles (23.8 km) with a significant 1509 feet (460 metres) of elevation gain, typically completed in about 2 hours and 8 minutes. This challenging route takes you across expansive moorland, through dense forests, and into deep valleys, offering a diverse landscape. You will encounter unpaved sections and potentially muddy tracks across Levisham Moor, leading to the dramatic Hole of Horcum, a massive natural amphitheatre, before descending towards Dalby Forest's red route with its twisting singletrack and berms.

This loop is considered a hard bike ride, demanding very good fitness from touring cyclists. Be prepared for varied terrain, including some unpaved and difficult segments where you might need to push your bike. While the broader Levisham area offers routes for different abilities, this specific trail leans towards the more challenging end, so plan accordingly for a demanding ride.

The trail combines stunning natural geological features with rich historical elements. You will pass the Hole of Horcum, formed over millennia, and traverse Levisham Moor, which holds archaeological remains like Bronze Age barrows and Iron Age boundary dykes. Enjoy views into Newtondale from Skelton Tower, a former shooting lodge, where you might spot steam trains on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, and consider a stop in the charming Levisham village.
