As a memorial to the endless number of war dead, places like this "Cimitero militare" - in German-speaking countries they are usually referred to as a "war cemetery" or "soldiers' cemetery" - are still very important today.
"Now you, O Lord, let your servant depart in peace, as you said..." says the so-called "Song of Simeon" (Gospel of Luke chapter 2, verse 29). However, the untold number of people buried here (more than 30,000) did not die in peace, but rather became victims of the cruel war and an inhumane tyranny.
The most important and, at the same time, enduring function of military cemeteries and war cemeteries is to remember this and to remind each generation anew to maintain peace in the long term.

Nestled at the Futa Pass along the Via Degli Dei, the German Military Cemetery stands as a poignant reminder of history's somber chapters. This solemn site pays homage to those who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II, a place where the echoes of the past resonate with profound significance.

As you approach the cemetery, the atmosphere changes, and a hush settles over the landscape. The meticulously kept grounds, adorned with rows of white crosses, speak volumes about the lives lost and the collective tragedy of war.

Infinite sadness................. seeing all the graves of twenty-year-olds sent to die far from their lives................ absurdities of war ...............
