It was the privileged and fortified residence of the Marquises of Saluzzo

Since its construction, Castiglia has represented the highest expression of the role of small but famous capital that Saluzzo held for four centuries. The construction of the castle of Saluzzo, at the top of the village on previous fortifications, can be dated between 1270 and 1286. The popular name Castiglia probably derives from the Latin plural castella ("the castles") and perhaps alludes to the complex of fortified buildings, attested since 1120.
During the 16th century, the French occupation of the Marquisate and the subsequent annexation to the Duchy of Savoy led to its decline and degradation.
In 1825 work began to reduce the ancient manor house to a prison. The transformation involved the reconstruction of the main body and the consequent destruction of the fifteenth-century decorations.
Since 2006 the complex has been the subject of a long and careful restoration. Two important exhibitions have been open since April 2014: the Museum of Chivalrous Civilization, and the Museum of Prison Memory.

Ancient village of Saluzzo, surmounted by the Castilla - fortress-castle that dominates the city, similar to the Spielberg in Brno (ironically). Area to visit absolutely. Climbs a bit tough, cobbled and labyrinthine - here and there I gave up looking for the right road, and shouldered my bike up the steps.
