Before the introduction of running water in the houses, there were public washhouses in the villages in which women (mostly maids) of the families did their laundry. They were also places people went to socialize and chat. An important part of the women's social life also took place there. A daily meeting point, so to speak, which made it possible to find out the latest news and the latest village gossip.
The first laundresses were forced to wash their laundry in the river, on their knees and outdoors in all weathers.
