The most imposing constructions in the region were the defensive works of the fortress belt, which was located in the mountains around the city - the Mostar fortress. Shortly after the Austro-Hungarian soldiers arrived, they began building these facilities. The actual construction period, which was preceded by appropriate strategic-tactical and structural planning, lasted from 1888 to the end of the monarchy in 1918. Especially between 1886 and 1888 and 1914 and 1916, these fortifications were rapidly expanded due to the threats at the time. A total of 19 defensive structures (6 plants, ten guard houses, 3 entrenchments) and a large number of smaller positions or military facilities (barriers, shelters, anti-aircraft defenses, etc.) were built along a line of around 22 kilometers.
