The Vogeltor in Augsburg is an important historical city gate that served as part of the medieval city fortifications. It was built in 1445 under the direction of the then mayor Konrad Vögelin and replaced a previous building from 1374/75.
Architecture and location:
• The four-story, square brick tower has a pointed arch passage with a three-bay star-ribbed vault.
The gate was originally equipped with a drawbridge that led over the city moat. Around 1880, both the bridge and the moat were removed.
Origin of the name:
The exact origin of the name “Vogeltor” is unclear. Possible explanations are:
Named after Mayor Konrad Vögelin, who commissioned the construction.
A bird catcher lived in the previous building between 1403 and 1409.
When the foundation stone was laid, numerous birds are said to have flown over the construction site.
Historical anecdote:
According to a legend, members of the city council doubted that the gate was straight after it was completed. To prove otherwise, the builder is said to have done his work from the tower, with the droppings falling vertically and not touching the walls. Two stone figures on the tower commemorate this event.
Destruction and reconstruction:
• In the night of the bombing from February 25th to 26th, 1944, the Vogeltor was badly damaged and burned down; only the Gothic archway remained.
• The tower was rebuilt in 1954. A stylized battlement, which marks the course of the old city wall, was added by 1966.
Significance today:
The Vogeltor is a striking testimony to Augsburg's city history and a popular photo motif. It is a listed building and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Augsburg Water Management System".
In the immediate vicinity is the historic fountain at the Vogeltor, which was built in 1538 and supplied the Lechviertel with drinking water until 1879.
The Vogeltor is therefore an important relic of Augsburg's city fortifications and a symbol of the city's rich history.
