The Papitz clay pools south of Schkeuditz (belong to the Luppeaue nature reserve) have a wide range of different habitats in a very small area. As a result, a large variety of animals and plants could develop and have been preserved to this day. The water areas of the Papitzer Lehmlachen offer a replacement for small water bodies that have been eliminated elsewhere, e.g. as habitats for waterfowl, tree and moor frogs, many insect and mollusc species.
