Built in the 14th century, Porte Saint-Jean was rebuilt in 1778 following a city expansion project. It takes its name from the Saint-Jean Baptiste chapel located nearby. The Virgin gilded with gold leaf was installed in 1866 and bears the inscription “posuerunt me custodem” (“They [the Tarasconnais] established their guardian for me”). Since 1930 the gate has been listed in the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments.
