Built in the 14th century, the Saint-Jean Gate was rebuilt in 1778 as part of a city expansion project. It takes its name from the nearby Saint-Jean-Baptiste Chapel. The gilded Virgin Mary statue, adorned with gold leaf, was installed in 1866 and bears the inscription "posuerunt me custodem" (They [the people of Tarascon] made me their guardian). Since 1930, the gate has been listed as a supplementary historical monument.
