As part of the ecological redesign of the Rur, three main focuses were set:In order to create a dynamic flow, a considerably widened channel bed was created within the historic flood embankments in accordance with the original state. Flat, unpaved bays, shifting gravel banks and islands offer a variety of natural habitats for animals and plants. To create a biotope network, the formerly artificially created foreland was removed down to the gravel base and individual willow bushes were planted on the areas and lean, only occasionally mown meadows and fallow land were created. For extensive recreational use, new, attractive paths were created, some of them far from the banks. They make it possible to experience the river, which is now more natural again, “on your doorstep”.
