The Markusstein, also Markstein or mark stone called, is a rock formation near bath Arolsen. The name of the rock came from a hermit named Mark, who according to stories lived in the stone cave below the ledge. The stone was known by the Prince Karl August Friedrich von Waldeck. In stories it says that the prince had been on horseback on horseback. In the Arolser Tiergarten he saw a deer, which he chased after. The animal ran up to the rock and jumped down there. The prince chased after, not realizing he was heading straight for a huge abyss. According to the legend, his horse saved him from certain death, when he reared up on the rock just before the abyss and abruptly stopped. Even today, impressions of the horseshoe can be seen.
