It is said that on moonless nights a ghost appears on this bridge. The history and legend of the Ponte della Pia in the province of Siena

Along the road from Siena towards Massa Marittima there is a bridge of Roman origin with a strange legend.

The Ponte della Pia rises shortly after the town of Rosia, not far from the Montarrenti Castle and, in the past, played an important role along the route of the ancient Via Massetana, which connected Siena to the Maremma.

According to what is said, the bridge is dedicated to Pia de' Tolomei, wife of Nello d'Inghiramo de' Pannocchieschi, who crossed it to go into forced exile in the Castello della Pietra in Maremma where she died in unclear circumstances.

Different versions circulate about the death of the beautiful Pia: according to some, she was murdered by her husband because she had failed to give him heirs, while other versions say that Nello, in love with another woman, caused his wife to fall from the ramparts of the Castel di Pietra, causing pass off what happened as an accident.

The story is also remembered in the fifth canto of Purgatory of the Divine Comedy.

In Germany, this bridge would have long been blocked by the TÜV. But here she is freely accessible and has her own charm. It crosses a small rocky riverbed and is absolutely stable, albeit without railing.

If you are in the area, a detour to this bridge ruin but highly recommended.
