The construction of Hohenwerfen Castle was a less than pleasant time for Salzburg: numerous political unrest and the Investiture Controversy made fortified structures necessary for the archbishopric, and so in 1077 Archbishop Gebhard built Hohenwerfen Castle, Hohensalzburg Fortress and the castle on the Petersberg in Friesach .
