The actual, first castle of Wiltz was located in Niederwiltz, where the deanery church stands today. It was intended to protect the town from its enemies, but the location was so poorly chosen that it was repeatedly captured.
In the 13th century, in search of a more favorable site, the Lords of Wiltz built the new castle on a higher rocky outcrop.
Under the reign of Count Jan, construction of the Renaissance castle, which still stands today, began in 1631. The new building was completed around 1720.
