Oldest church in the diocese of Minden. Double church consisting of a parish church and a former monastery church.
The Levern Church is one of the oldest in the diocese of Minden, mentioned in a document from the 12th Bishop of Minden, Milo (969-996). The aristocratic own church became a parish church in episcopal ownership. In 1227 a nunnery was founded next to the existing Levern church. The coexistence of the Romanesque parish church and the younger monastery church lasted for about two hundred years, and during the Middle Ages it was incorporated into the Cistercian order. During the Reformation, the monastery was converted into a free worldly women's monastery. The monastery curia and other monastery buildings that still exist today were built. In 1828 the parish church was structurally merged with the collegiate church. Only two massive square pillars remained from the dividing wall. Since then, three high pointed arch openings have connected the two church rooms to form a three-aisled nave with a tower and choir offset to the south. The oldest interior decoration includes wall paintings that were uncovered during the interior renovation in 1914. This wall painting was created in the late 13th century and is the oldest preserved in the Minden-Lübbecker Land.
