When the border between West and East Berlin was sealed on August 13, 1961, Peter Mädler was 18 years old. Born on July 10, 1943 in Opperau near Breslau, today's Wroclaw, he was probably separated from his biological parents in his early childhood due to the chaos of war. Around 1950, the Mädler couple living in Hoyerswerda adopted him. The adoptive father works as a warehouse manager, the adoptive mother is a housewife. According to a report from a childhood friend, Peter Mädler learned in the early 1960s that his biological relatives lived in West Germany. That's probably why he's planning his escape, which he doesn't want to realize until he's finished his training. But the construction of the wall thwarts his plans. Peter Mädler initially distances himself from his plan; But in April 1963 he was driven to action: he wanted to dare to flee to West Berlin.
Peter Mädler is only about ten meters from the border. One of the guards asks him to get out of the water. Peter Mädler calls out to the two border guards: “Don’t shoot!” and swims further towards West Berlin. Without first firing a warning shot, the guard fired 30 shots in his direction.
