    The hall was built 20 years prior to the tower's construction. Mr Archibald Browning Jnr initiated the movement to have the hall built. He and his brother Richard worked hard to raise funds for the project, and Archibald named it the 'Popular Institute' which was completed in 1859.

    The bell tower (campanile) was added to the hall in 1879. James Archibald of Robert Archibald & Sons, woollen manufacturer in Tillicoultry and proprietor of the villa Beechwood, provided £1,500 for its construction. Originally the clock tower had a crown which was lost at some point due to a lightning strike
