About 2000 years ago, the Romans built a canal between the islands of Cres and Lošinj (Osorski tijesnac, approx. 100 m long) to shorten the sea routes for smaller ships (previously Cres and Lošinj were considered to be just one island). Likewise, Lošinj has recently been divided into two by the Privlaka Canal. This is located at the Marina Lošinj, just before the town of Mali Lošinj.
