Very beautiful architectural ensemble with a nice overlooking view of the Loire. This is worth it because the climb up the Grande Rue (which is actually quite narrow) makes your calves heat up. Apparently there is no water point on the square, which is a shame.
"Iconic building of Saint-Florent-le-Vieil, the Benedictine abbey perched on Mont-Glonne overlooks the Loire from its fifty meters. The former Mauriste Abbey constitutes a major monastic complex in Maine-et-Loire, whose History began in the 4th century under the leadership of the hermit Saint Florent.
Its abbey church, the architectural jewel of the city, contains the white marble tomb of Bonchamps, sculpted by the famous French artist: David D'Angers. The choir of the church has a set of remarkable stained glass windows, part of which traces the history of the Vendée Wars which deeply marked the history of the city." (Anjou-Tourisme)
