Schwarzenberg Castle emerged from a medieval fortification and, in addition to the St. Georgen Church, shapes the image of the large district town of Schwarzenberg in the Saxon Ore Mountains.

    Cultural center in Schwarzenberg Castle

Schwarzenberg Castle has housed the Schwarzenberg City Museum since 1954. In 1957 the first permanent exhibition on "Erzgebirge Iron" was opened. The focus of the collection and exhibition is on the history of the castle and town, mining in the region, the artisanal processing of iron and tin and textile lace in a wide variety of genres.

Concert lovers, creative people and children rule in the castle

Schwarzenberg Castle, enthroned high on a rock, not only significantly shapes the image of the city of Schwarzenberg, but also offers a variety of surprises inside. Music lovers will get their money's worth in the elegant ballroom and in the rustic vaulted cellar - from atmospheric folk concerts to stylish piano evenings, there is sure to be something for every taste.

Folk art school of the Erzgebirgskreis

    Tradition meets modernity

Modern influences of the present give lace as a trademark of an entire region a contemporary appeal. Young and old alike experience this in a new and different way in the courses at the Volkskunstschule des Erzgebirgskreis. Creative ideas with fine threads become reality with skillful movements under the guidance of experienced lace teachers. The integration of new influences, fantasies and techniques, modern and unusual materials makes lace making attractive.

The castle was probably founded in the 12th century as a fortification and formed the starting point for the settlement of Schwarzenberg and the surrounding area. The former castle was given its present form by a conversion to the electoral Saxon hunting lodge from 1555 to 1558 for Elector August of Saxony. In 1851/52 the keep and the south wing were raised, and in 1875/76 an administration building was added.
