The Förderkreis Umwelt- und Naturschutz Hondelage e.V (FUN) has secured the marl through a purchase and has designed an earth-historical experience point that is accessible to everyone. Numerous shells, ammonite belemnites, crabs, fish and even dinosaur remains have been found in the Poseidonia schist. The outstanding findings, which were found here, as well as at the second excavation site in Schadelah, can be visited in the Natural History Museum Braunschweig. Among them is the approx. 2 m long sea crocodile, which was found in the marl pit in 1957, as well as the 3m long ichthyosaur found in Schandelah.

In the Hondelager Juramulde you can get the best information about the geological and historical features of the Lower Jura. That was 175 million years ago.
