Chris Gueffroy and his friend Christian Gaudian attempted to escape from this spot in February 1989. Gueffroy paid for the attempt with his life and Gaudian was seriously injured, arrested and later sentenced. In October 1989, Gaudian was released to West Berlin after the Federal Republic bought his freedom.
The four border guards involved were awarded the "Border Troops Achievement Badge" and 150 marks each.

The 20-year-old Chris Gueffroy wanted to flee from 5 to 6 February 1989 at this point along with a friend to West Berlin. They assumed that would not shoot at the border. Therefore, they did not respond to calls and warning shots by GDR border guards. Chris Gueffroy was mortally wounded by a heart attack and collapsed at the frontier fence. He was the last fugitive shot dead on the border with West Berlin.
