Saillon is the home of a small world record. The curiosity lies outside the village center. On an inconspicuous little hill, three vines climb up from a patch of earth surrounded by limestone blocks. They take up 1.67 square meters of space. Allow me to introduce myself: the officially smallest vineyard in the world.

Thanks to a special permit, this little spot is registered in the land register, because officials usually only open their land registers for areas of around 200 square meters. But because the vineyard belongs to the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists, an exception was made in the Valais offices.

La Vigne à Farinet», the official name of the vineyard, is not particularly productive: the three gnarled vines, which are more reminiscent of squat desert oaks, produce just a few deciliters of grape juice. However, the harvested grapes are mixed with the best Valais wine every year, resulting in around 1,000 bottles. These are sold and the proceeds go to charity.

Every year, celebrities from show business, sports or politics stop by and try their hand at being quick winemakers in the bonsai vineyard. Alain Berset, Claudia Cardinale and Zinédine Zidane are said to have worked hard for the three vines.

        DALAI LAMA – THE WINEMAKER

THE SMALLEST VINEYARD IN THE WORLD

Saillon is one of the best-preserved medieval villages in Switzerland. It lies between Martigny and Sion on a sunny south-facing slope. Typical of this part of the Valais, wine is more than just an agricultural product. Thanks to the mild climate, even fig and almond trees thrive.
