This castle has undergone centuries of building work with the oldest parts dating back to the 12th century. Much of what remains is from the 16th century and it's in extraordinary condition with large sections of wall still standing. It was ruined during the Civil War.

The castle is under the care of English Heritage and is free to enter and walk around.

It's an imposing site from the roadside, but getting up close to the building is advised.
